Predictable

It took all of 2.5 minutes of internet searching to find several references to yellow being a bad luck color for cowboys. The only explanation I could find was that " a cowboy wearing a yellow shirt got killed back at Cheyenne years ago." Not too definitive but folks from Philadelphia to Arizona mention it. A few stipulate that this is only true in the arena, which is good news because we would be seeing some mighty wet range riders if they had to forgo those yellow rain slickers. Either way, it might not matter because this superstition appears to apply only to rodeo riders and as we all know "THIS IS NOT A RODEO! THIS IS THE PBR!"

Thank you Mr.MBC for the insight.
I do love the straightforward reasoning of why yellow shirts are bad luck (although it wasn't so amusing for the unfortunate cowboy in Cheyenne.)

Heh, I always giggle when the announcer screams that line at the beginning of the event. I want to answer back, "THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REMINDING ME!"

The type of research you do sounds so interesting. I live in GA and just visited the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, GA for the first time. It's a beautiful place with a fascinating collection, at least for a Southern gal like me.

People's superstitions sure are peculiar, eh? But heh, if a cowboy riding a bull in yellow thinks it's bad luck cuz a cowboy died wearing yellow in the arena, more power to him! (Marines should probably stop wearing camouflage in combat, using the same rationale.) Myself, I have always refused to wear anything but striped boxer shorts. No plain, no plaid. They HAVE to be striped. So there ya go...
